Sustainable Development Management Plans (SDMP)

Sustainable Development Management Plans (SDMP)

Having a Board Approved Sustainable Development Management Plan (SDMP) is one of the cornerstones of the NHS Carbon Reduction Strategy.  An SDMP is based on the right mix of Social, Economic and Environmental factors that are fundamental to creating a sustainable healthcare service.

Lead NHS CEO for Sustainable Development, Sir Neil McKay, would like all Trusts to approve an SDMP to ensure the NHS meets its carbon reduction commitments and makes essential efficiency savings.

Please see our latest "Guidance for writing a Board level SDMP" which has been revised extensively.

Why have an SDMP?

An SDMP (which encompasses a Sustainable Development Action Plan or SDAP) is crucial to embedding sustainability into NHS services.  It is an excellent mechanism for Chief Executives to gain assurance that their organisation is delivering on the agenda and supports the Statement on Internal Control sign off required in the NHS Financial controls.

An SDMP helps organisations involved in the Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme (CRC) and ensures that they can avoid financial penalties.

SDMP Map

Working in collaboration with Erpho, we have produced maps showing the number of board approved SDMPs per region.

74% of NHS organisations now have an SDMP.  Please view our latest map (May 2011).

We have seen a 15% increase in SDMPs since November 2010 and a 26% increase since May 2010.

The map will be updated again in May 2012.

SDMP - Saving money

Developing an SDMP is likely to save your organisation money because you will be adopting carbon reduction measures sooner rather than later.  For further information on saving money please read our guide:  "Save Money by Saving Carbon".

Below is a list of SDMPs, written by other NHS organisations, which you may find useful.  Over time we will add to this list.
