Route Map

What is it?

The Route Map is a framework to develop a sustainable health system in line with the QIPP agenda.

It will help you to coordinate and take action so your organisation can save money, resources, improve health and make changes future proof.

What can you do?

We've split the Route Map into SIX themes.  We'd like you to join one (or more) of them.

We don't want to increase your workload, but instead we want to use your experience and expertise to turn a vision into a sustainable reality.  We would like you to act as a sounding board for future developments.

The SIX themes

If you join you'll meet an inspiring set of colleagues who will be shaping the future of the NHS locally, regionally, nationally and internationally.

Please click on one of the themes below and find out which group best suits you or your organisation.  You'll be able to sign up in the grey box on that page.

Downloading the document

Below you can download the Route Map document.  In the downloadable version we have taken out the date line which sat to the right of the Route Map.  This date line was meant to purely give an impression of time progressing, however some people thought the dates indicated when the Route Map work would need to be achieved by or begun.  This isn't the case so we have taken out the date line to avoid any confusion.

Further information

The Route Map is the result of a ground-breaking collaboration between the NHS and around 70 partners.

The Route Map framework isn't set in stone and will evolve over time as we discuss what needs to be done at an individual or an organisational level to make the NHS more sustainable.

Pledge your support

Once you've signed up to one of the themes then feel free to pledge your support for the Route Map process (grey button on this page).  If you're representing your organisation then you can also send us your logo.

More than a 100 organisations and individuals are supporting the Route Map.  Find out who they are.  You may also like to make a comment or ask a question in the box below.

Videos, Pictures and Resources

We have a large selection of streamed and downloadable videos and pictures from the launch of the Route Map and you can find presentation slides, graphics and further information on the Route Map document in our Publications & Resources section.

The Route Map correctly states "...for the future in all decision making processes, Life cycle costing is the norm in health"

The time line against this is at best 2030! This 'standard' needs to be embedded, indeed mandated, into the procurment process NOW if there is to be a step change in carbon reduction.

In addition to this being a 'standard' I would suggest that it also needs to be including under 'behaviours'.

SDU response: We agree with your comment. All elements on the Route Map need action to start now – the timeline was intended to show that we will also need to continue progressing for many years to come. We apologise that the graphic can be mis-represented and in future will take the timeline out.

What we need to accompany the route map document is some self assessment or criteria against which we can see where are and what we need to do to move to the next level. Something similar to the Good Corporate Citizenship self assessment model

SDU response: Absolutely. Most organisations within the health system are at different points on this journey (and there is often quite a bit of variation within each organisation too). The Good Corporate Citizenship self assessment model is an important place to start in order to raise awareness and benchmark where you are starting from. Then there are the four areas for action in the original NHS Carbon Reduction Strategy as a guide to important actions. Within different staff groups in the NHS, there are a series of "5 to survive" guidance papers on the SDU website made in collaboration with Royal Colleges and related professional bodies.

I find the route map extremely interesting and support what is trying to be implemented. It looks like your target is very broad. How do you plan in policing the whole project?

SDU response: We are not primarily set up as a policing unit. Good organisations govern themselves in terms of both setting their own vision, aspirations, and targets, and serving the needs of the patients, public and staff. If organisations feel they need to be policed they may be missing an important feature of 21st century leadership. What IS important (and what organisations such as the SDU try and provide, is a consistent reporting framework that is avid and helps organisations, departments, and teams benchmark their progress across the whole spectrum of activities. Our role is also to help all organisations who work within and for the NHS see the scale of the challenge but also the scale of the opportunities. Taking action for tomorrow almost always helps us do the day job better, be it saving money, saving carbon, improving health, improving staff morale.

This website page is confusing. It refers to "6 strands on the menu on the left" when there appear to be 12 and none marked as "strands". The actual Route Map refers to 6 themes - are these the "strands".

The page goes on to refer to "Level 2: In the Loop - Use the document template in the 'Downloadable Resources' section" but no link to the section.

It looks as though, well meaning though the attempt, that this has been put together i haste.

SDU response: Thank you for your comments Geoff, we welcome feedback. I have made some immediate changes to the Route Map page to address the issues you mention and I hope this makes things a little clearer.

What routes are being used to raise the Route Map onto the agenda of Trust Boards?

SDU response: Thank you John. We are sending a hard copy of the Route Map to every NHS organisation CEO and to GP consortia leads. We are also hoping regional leads will incorporate this into their regional planning and organisational sustainability leads will raise this as part of their SDMP review process at Board level.

Please let us know if you have some other suggestions you would like us to consider.

Why do your documents use so much ink?

SDU response: Our documents are purposefully streamlined to be on as few pages as possible whilst making the document easy to read and get into. We are hoping that people will mostly use the pdf versions and only print when necessary.
We have to balance the wish to promote colourful, readable documents that potentially get greater readership with a more report style document that uses less ink but where the message may not get as much spread as we would like. Maybe the best option would be to have both available. Thank you for your comment
